Barn Owls – Spring 2020
Our topic this term has been The Benin – a west African people who lived-in modern-day Nigeria about 1000 years ago. (Modern day Benin is NOT in the same place!) We have used our developing global location skills to find Benin City on google maps, we have placed the era on a European and African time line, we have investigated their culture and religion and we have discussed and compared some of their living habits with our modern habits. In art we used cross stitch sewing skills to make Benin inspired designs.
In English we have written two pieces, a set of instructions and a retelling of an African fable. Both built on known writing skills and introduced a few new ones – for example the use of: and, in different ways. Spellings and handwriting have also been a point of focus.
In maths we have worked on our addition and subtraction but we have also continued to focus on reading challenges carefully and using a variety of skills and strategies to think about maths and solve problems. In Number Day every pupil made a 100-bead string – to help with a variety of counting tasks.
In PE we have worked on our gymnastics skills – developing individual movements and shapes and building them into combinations and sequences. WE have also been swimming – improving our water awareness, the need for streamlined shapes, arm and leg actions, and the three main strokes (breast stroke, back stroke and front crawl). Formal water safety and survival training has also been on our list recently.
In French we have continued to build a range of basic vocabulary for various settings and we have continued to use repetition, question and answering sequences to build pronunciation and early communication.
Finally, in computing we have been developing and improving our knowledge of and speed in using word processing software.
